Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) diagram.

Rilon Thailand Knowledge topic Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) diagram.

Tungsten Arc Welding with Gas Shielding (TIG) or other names such as TIG Welding (Tungsten Inert Gas), WIG Welding (Wolfram Inert Gas), Process 141 (TIG) (ISO 4063-1978), and Argon Welding."

Tungsten Electrode

According to AWS A5.12, such as EWP, EWTh-2, EWZr, available in various sizes such as 1.6, 2.4, 3.2 mm, etc. EWP is used with AC current for welding aluminum, EWTh-2 is used with DCEN for welding steel, stainless steel, nickel, copper, etc.

TIG Torch

It consists of the handle, Tungsten Electrode, Nozzle (Cup), Collet & Body, Insulator, O-ring, Cap. Inside, there is a welding cable system, control switch cable, gas delivery line, and coolant water system (if available).

TIG Welding Machine

It uses a Constant Current (CC) type.

  1. DCEN welding current is commonly used for general metal welding.
  2. ACHF or high-frequency AC is used for welding aluminum and magnesium, as the tungsten electrode, when positive, helps to remove oxides from the workpiece surface. When the tungsten electrode is negative, it allows the workpiece to heat up and melt properly. High frequency accelerates oxide removal and increases heat energy.
  3. DCEP welding current is not commonly used because it provides lower heat energy, and the tungsten electrode wears out quickly.

Welding Machine Power Supply

  1. 220V 50Hz, 1P (produces DCEN current)
  2. 380V 50Hz, 3P (produces DCEN & ACHF current)

Gas for TIG Welding

Use argon gauges or CGA-580 valves. Only inert gases are used for TIG welding:

  1. Argon: blue-gray color cylinder, SG-A gas type
  2. Argon + Helium: blue-gray color cylinder with a brown stripe, SG-AHe-10 gas type (90% Ar + 10% He)

TIG Welding Cable

The TIG welding cable consists of a welding current delivery cable, gas delivery cable, control switch cable, and coolant water system (if available).

Grounding Cable for Workpiece

Example: Copper welding current delivery cable, AWG size 1/0.

Ground Clamp

Used to attach the cable to the workpiece. It must be able to withstand high current and conduct electricity effectively.

Base Metals (Workpiece Material)

  1. Aluminum and aluminum alloys (ASTM B-209)
  2. Stainless steel plates (Chromium, Chromium-Nickel) for high pressure and heat resistance (ASTM A-240)
  3. Carbon steel plates (ASTM A-36)
  4. Seamless steel pipes (ASTM A-53)
