Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG/MAG) diagram

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) or other names such as MIG (Metal Inert Gas), MAG (Metal Active Gas), Metal Shielding Gas (MSG) welding, Process 131 (MIG), Process 135 (MAG), and CO2 welding.
MIG/MAG Welding Torch
It consists of the Nozzle, Contact Tip, Insulation, and Gas Diffuser.
MIG/MAG Welding Machine
It is of the Constant Voltage (CV) type, commonly used with DCEP welding current. The arc voltage (V) setting depends on the size of the welding wire, the thickness of the workpiece, and the welding position.
- High V setting: longer arc distance – higher energy.
- Low V setting: shorter arc distance – lower energy.
Adjusting the Wire Feed Speed (S)
- Faster speed: higher welding current (A) and faster wire melting rate.
- Slower speed: lower current (A) and slower wire melting rate.
Welding Wire or Filler Metal
It is a solid core wire (Solid Wire Electrode).
- Stainless steel welding wire according to AWS A5.9: ER308L, ER309L, ER310, ER316L
- Aluminum welding wire according to AWS A5.10: ER4043, ER5356
- Carbon steel welding wire according to AWS A5.18: ER70S-6
- Welding wires are packaged in spools with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 2.8 mm.
MIG Welding Gas
Use an argon gas gauge or CGA-580 valve.
MAG Welding Gas
Use a CO2 gas gauge or CGA-320 valve.
MIG Welding
Uses argon shielding gas with a blue-gray cylinder, SG-A gas type, and argon + helium with a blue-gray cylinder and a brown stripe, SG-AHe-10 gas type (90% Ar + 10% He).
MAG Welding
Uses carbon dioxide gas with a black cylinder and a white stripe, SG-C gas type.
MIG/MAG Welding Cable
It consists of the welding current cable, gas delivery line, welding wire guide tube, control switch cable, and coolant system (if available).
Grounding Cable for Workpiece
Example: Copper welding current cable, AWG size 1/0.
Ground Clamp
Used to attach to the workpiece. It must withstand high current and conduct electricity effectively.
Base Metals (Workpiece Material) Commonly Used
- Aluminum and aluminum alloys (ASTM B-209)
- Stainless steel plates (Chromium and Chromium-Nickel) for high pressure and heat resistance (ASTM A-240)
- Carbon steel plates (ASTM A-36)
- Seamless steel pipes (ASTM A-53)
